Threatened

THE STORY BEHIND ' Threatened '

This is the grand finale of the Invincible album. It is the spiritual successor to "Thriller" and "Ghosts," marking the final chapter in Michael Jackson’s career-long fascination with the supernatural. It also holds a heavy historical weight: as the closing track of his last studio album, it contains the final words Michael Jackson ever released on a new record during his lifetime.

The "Thriller" for the New Millennium throughout his career, Michael Jackson had a tradition of creating "Monster" anthems.

  • In the 80s, he gave us "Thriller."

  • In the 90s, he gave us "Ghosts" and "Is It Scary."

  • In 2001, he gave us "Threatened."

Michael wanted Invincible to end on a note of high drama. He wanted a track that was scary, aggressive, and theatrical. While "Thriller" was a fun, campy Halloween romp, "Threatened" is genuinely menacing. The lyrics suggest that the "monster" isn't a werewolf or a zombie—it is Michael Jackson himself. He sings: "You should be watching me, you should feel threatened... I'm the living dead, the dark thoughts in your head." It is a meta-commentary on how the media viewed him. After years of being called "Wacko Jacko" and treated like a freak show, Michael decided to embrace the role of the boogeyman.

The most defining feature of "Threatened" is its "guest rapper." Just as "Thriller" featured a spoken-word verse by horror legend Vincent Price, Michael wanted a similar narrator for "Threatened." He chose Rod Serling, the creator and host of the classic sci-fi series The Twilight Zone. The problem? Rod Serling had died in 1975.

To solve this, Michael and producer Rodney Jerkins engaged in a massive audio archaeology project. They purchased the rights to the entire Twilight Zone audio catalog. They listened to hundreds of hours of Serling’s intros and outros. They then digitally cut up individual words and sentences from Serling’s monologues and pasted them together to create a brand new "rap" verse that Serling never actually said in real life.

  • The Result: A ghostly verse where Serling says: "A nightmare... that lives in the brain... Michael Jackson." It was a feat of digital editing that was years ahead of its time, essentially using deep-fake audio techniques before the technology existed.

Producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins considers this one of the most complex beats he ever made. The rhythm is mathematical and chaotic. It doesn't follow a standard funk groove; it sounds like a machine malfunctioning.

  • The Heartbeat: The song opens and closes with the sound of a hospital heart monitor beeping. This adds a layer of mortality and tension to the track.

  • The Industrial Noise: The track is filled with sounds of grinding metal, static, and "jump scare" orchestral stabs. It was designed to keep the listener on edge, never allowing them to settle into a comfortable rhythm.

The lyrics are a direct threat to anyone who thinks they can control or understand Michael. "Half of me you'll never be, so you should feel threatened by me." In the context of his battle with the press and the music industry, this song is Michael asserting his dominance. He is warning his enemies that he is powerful, unpredictable, and dangerous. He frames himself as something not quite human, a force of nature that cannot be killed.

"Threatened" was never performed live, but it was scheduled to be a major part of the "This Is It" concerts in 2009. According to tour director Kenny Ortega, the plan was to mix "Thriller" with "Threatened." The setlist draft had the "Thriller" zombies transitioning into the industrial beat of "Threatened," with Michael performing a robotic, angular dance routine. It was intended to show the evolution of his horror style from the 1980s to the 2000s.

There is a poetic tragedy to this song being the album closer. As the song fades out, the heart monitor beeps one last time. Then, Rod Serling’s voice speaks the final line of the album:

"What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare. It isn't. It's the beginning."

These were the last words on the last album Michael Jackson released while he was alive. He intended it to mean that his career was entering a new, exciting chapter ("The Beginning"). However, looking back after his death in 2009, the line feels hauntingly ambiguous. It marked the end of his studio career and the beginning of his legend.

"Threatened" is a favorite among dancers and choreographers because of its sharp, staccato beat. It is often used in Halloween tribute shows as a modern alternative to "Thriller." It stands as a testament to Michael’s refusal to be ordinary. Even at the very end of his recording career, he was pushing boundaries, resurrecting dead narrators, and turning his own "freak" reputation into aggressive, powerful art.

LYRICS of THREATENED

Tonight's story is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction.
A monster had arrived in the village
The major ingredient of any recipe for fear is the unknown
And this person or thing is soon to be met
He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion
Oh yes, I did forget something didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the monster.

You're fearing me,
'Cause you know I'm a beast
Watching you when you sleep,
When you're in bed I'm underneath
You're trapped in halls,
And my face is the walls
I'm the floor when you fall,
And when you scream it's 'cause of me
I'm the living dead,
The dark thoughts in your head
I know just what you said
That's why you've got to be threatened by me

You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be,
So you should feel threatened by me

You think you're by yourself,
But it's my touch you felt
I'm not a ghost from Hell,
But I've got a spell on you
Your worst nightmare
It's me, I'm everywhere
In one blink I'll disappear,
And then I'll come back to haunt you
I'm telling you,
When you lie under a tomb
I'm the one watching you
That's why you got to be threatened by me

You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be,
So you should feel threatened by me

The unknown monster is about to embark
From a far corner, out of the dark
A nightmare, that's the case
Never Neverland, that's the place
This particular monster can read minds
Be in tow places at the same time
This is judgement night, execution, slaughter
The devil, ghosts, this monster is torture
You can be sure of one thing, that's fate
A human presence that you feel is strange
A monster that you can see disappear
A monster, the worst thing to fear.

You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be,
So you should feel threatened

You should be
Be threatened
Why you sleep
Be threatened
Everytime
Threatened
Half of me
So you should feel threatened by me!

You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be,
So you should feel threatened by me

You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be,
So you should feel threatened by me

What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare.
It isn't. It's the beginning.
