It is widely regarded as the most traditional pop ballad on the record, reminiscent of the classic songwriting of the 1970s and 80s.

 

For this track, Michael teamed up with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, the legendary producer behind massive hits for Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, and Madonna. Michael and Babyface had a long history of trying to work together. Babyface had previously written "Why" (which Michael gave to his nephews, 3T) and "On The Line" (for the Get on the Bus soundtrack). "You Are My Life" was the moment they finally landed a song on a major Michael Jackson studio album. Babyface’s signature style is all over the track: it is smooth, sentimental, and built around a strong, melodic acoustic guitar riff. It eschews the complex, futuristic production of Rodney Jerkins in favor of a "classic" sound that wouldn't feel out of place on a Carpenters or Barry Manilow record.

 

To ensure the lyrics hit the emotional mark, the team brought in Carole Bayer Sager. Sager is songwriting royalty, famous for co-writing anthems like "That's What Friends Are For" and "The Prayer." Her involvement signals exactly what Michael was aiming for: a timeless standard. He didn't want a trendy R&B hit; he wanted a song that could be played at weddings for the next fifty years. Sager’s lyrics are simple, direct, and universally relatable, focusing on the idea that one person can be the "sun" that chases away the clouds.

 

Like "Speechless," the subject of "You Are My Life" is open to interpretation, but most die-hard fans and biographers believe it is dedicated to his children, Prince and Paris. Michael became a father in the late 90s, and this was his first album released since their birth.

Michael’s singing on this track is incredibly restrained. There are no "hee-hees," no grunts, and no aggressive hiccups. He sings in a clear, open chest voice, using a lot of vibrato.
