Why You Wanna Trip on Me

THE STORY BEHIND ' Why You Wanna Trip on Me '

This is one of the most lyrically biting and socially conscious songs on the Dangerous album. It serves as Michael’s counter-argument to the world: "Why are you obsessed with my life when the world is falling apart?"

After the breaking glass and frantic energy of "Jam," the album settles into a darker, heavier pocket with "Why You Wanna Trip on Me."

This track is the definitive example of the Teddy Riley sound. Riley, the architect of New Jack Swing, designed the beat to be "bottom-heavy." If you listen to the track on a good system, the bass and the kick drum are mixed louder than almost anything else. It was designed to rattle the trunks of cars.

The song begins with a deceptive intro. It starts with a virtuoso acoustic guitar solo played by Paul Jackson Jr. The intro is fast, flamenco-influenced, and rhythmic. For nearly 40 seconds, the listener thinks they are about to hear a rock or Latin song. Then, without warning, the acoustic guitar is cut off by a heavy, industrial drum machine beat that drops like a hammer. This "bait and switch" was Michael’s way of keeping the listener off balance.

"Look at the World, Not Me" Lyrically, this is arguably the most intelligent defense of his own celebrity Michael ever wrote.

In the late 80s, the press had labeled him "Wacko Jacko." They were obsessed with his plastic surgery, his pet chimp, and his hyperbaric chamber. With this song, Michael flips the script. He doesn't deny being "strange"; instead, he argues that his strangeness is irrelevant compared to the horrors of the real world.

He lists the actual problems facing society in 1991:

  • "Uneducated minds"

  • "Drug addiction"

  • "Police brutality"

  • "Prostitution"

The chorus "Why you wanna trip on me?" is slang. To "trip" on someone means to hassle them, to overreact, or to obsess over them. Michael is asking: With all these disasters happening (disease, hunger, crime), why are you wasting your energy analyzing my life? It is a song about the hypocrisy of the media and the public's misplaced priorities.

The "Growl" Michael’s vocal delivery on this track is unique. He sings much of the song in his lower register, using a gritty, growling tone that was rarely heard on Thriller or Bad.

He sounds angry. When he sings the line "They say I'm strange, really don't know who I am," he spits the words out with venom. The background vocals are also distinct; they are stacked in a way that sounds almost like a chant or a protest march. This wasn't a polished pop vocal; it was a street vocal.

Paul Jackson Jr. The unsung hero of this track is guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. (no relation to Michael). He was Michael’s go-to session guitarist for years (he also played on "Beat It" and "P.Y.T.").

For "Why You Wanna Trip on Me," Paul recorded dozens of guitar parts. The intro is the most famous, but if you listen closely to the verses, there is a "chucking" rhythm guitar that locks in with the hi-hats. This technique adds a funky, organic feel to the computerized drums. The electric guitar solo in the bridge is jagged and dissonant, mimicking the chaos of the lyrics.

"Why You Wanna Trip on Me" was never released as a commercial single. Because of this, it was never given a music video.

However, the song had one massive moment in the spotlight. During Michael’s historic Super Bowl XXVII Halftime Show in 1993, he included the song in his opening medley. After "Jam," the band transitioned into the heavy groove of "Why You Wanna Trip on Me." Michael performed the intricate choreography, a militaristic, stomping routine for about a minute before transitioning into "Billie Jean."

For millions of viewers, this was the only time they ever heard the song. It was a bold choice to play a non-single at the Super Bowl, but Michael felt the message ("Stop looking at me, look at the world") was perfect for the massive television audience.

Rumors have circulated for years that a music video was planned for the song but was scrapped. Allegedly, the concept involved Michael dancing in a "hall of mirrors" or a surreal environment where the walls were covered in tabloid headlines that would crumble as he danced. While this video was never shot, the concept of destroying tabloids would later be used in the "Scream" video with Janet Jackson in 1995.

Among critics and hip-hop producers, "Why You Wanna Trip on Me" is often cited as the hidden gem of Dangerous. It is the track that proves Michael could adapt to the 90s without sounding cheesy.

The beat has been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists, including LL Cool J. It represents the "tough" side of Michael Jackson, the man who wasn't afraid to look the world in the eye and say, "You have bigger problems than me."

LYRICS of WHY YOU WANNA TRIP ON ME

They say I'm different, they don't understand
But there's a bigger problem that's much more in demand
You got world hunger, not enough to eat
So there's really no time to be trippin' on me

You got school teachers who don't wanna teach
You got grown people who can't write or read
You got strange diseases, ha, but there's no cure
You got many doctors that aren't so sure

So tell me (why)
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why)
(Why do you wanna)
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why)
Stop trippin'

We've got more problems than we'll ever need
You got gang violence and bloodshed on the street
You got homeless people with no food to eat
With no clothes on their back and no shoes for their feet

We've got drug addiction in the minds of the weak
We've got so much corruption, police brutality
We've got streetwalkers walkin' into darkness
Tell me, what are we doin' to try to stop this?

(Why) Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why)
(Why) Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why) Tell me

(Why do you wanna)
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why)

(Why do you wanna)
Why you wanna trip on me
You stop trippin', they stop trippin'
Everybody just stop trippin'

(Why) Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why)
(Why) Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why) Don't you trip on me, brother

(Why) Baby, whoa-oh
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why) No, no, no, no, no, don't trip on me, brother
(Why) Baby
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why) No, no, no, no, you need to understand it (stop trippin')

(Why do you wanna) Tell me
Why you wanna trip on me (tell me)
(Why, why, why) Don't you trip on me, brother

(Why do you wanna) Tell me, tell me
Why you wanna trip on me (why)
(You can't, you can't, you can't understand it)

(Why do you wanna)
Why you wanna trip on me
(Why, why, why)

(Why do you wanna)
Why you wanna trip on me
You stop trippin', they stop trippin'
Everybody just stop trippin'

Stop trippin'
Stop trippin'
(Trippin', trippin', trippin', trippin')
(Trippin', trippin', trippin', trippin')
Stop trippin'
(Trippin', trippin', trippin', trippin')
(Trippin', trippin', trippin', trippin')
Stop trippin'
