Whatever Happens
THE STORY BEHIND ' Whatever Happens '
This track is widely considered the artistic masterpiece of the Invincible album. It is a cinematic, spaghetti-western-inspired epic that brought together the King of Pop and the King of Latin Rock.
"Whatever Happens" is not a typical R&B song; it is a movie for the ears. Michael Jackson wanted to create a track with a tense, dramatic atmosphere, reminiscent of Ennio Morricone’s scores for Sergio Leone westerns (like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). The song tells the story of two people in a desperate situation. The lyrics are vague but heavy with dread: "He's afraid that what he does is not right / He's afraid that he's not gonna make it." Fans have debated the plot for years. Is it about a couple facing an unplanned pregnancy? A crime gone wrong? A drug deal? The ambiguity is intentional. Michael focuses on the feeling of fear and reassurance rather than the specific details, repeating the mantra: "Whatever happens... don't let go of my hand."
To achieve the Latin-blues feel he wanted, Michael recruited the legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. Santana had just experienced a massive career resurgence with his album Supernatural (and the hit "Smooth"). Michael called Santana at 2:00 AM to ask him to be on the track. Santana later recalled that Michael hummed the guitar melody to him over the phone. When they met in the studio, the chemistry was electric. Santana didn't just play a solo; he provided the "voice" of the song's tension. His acoustic Spanish guitar riffs in the verses set the mood, and his electric guitar wailing in the climax mimics the sound of a woman crying. Santana also added his signature whistling to the track, further enhancing the "Western standoff" vibe.
While Michael and Santana are the stars, the track owes its unique sound to a third person: Gil Cang. The song was originally written by Cang and Geoffrey Williams. It was an obscure demo sitting in a vault until Michael heard it. However, Michael didn't just cover it; he transformed it. He brought in Teddy Riley to add a heavy, hip-hop drum beat underneath the acoustic guitars. This genre-mashing, mixing dusty, organic blues guitars with hard-hitting digital drums created a sound that was unique to 2001.
The Grit Michael’s vocals on "Whatever Happens" are arguably his best on the entire album. He adopts a jagged, gritty tone that he rarely used.
-
The Verses: He sings in a low, trembling register, sounding like a man on the verge of a panic attack.
-
The Climax: As the song builds, Michael unleashes a raw, raspy scream: "Don't you do it! Don't you! Don't you let go!" It is a performance of pure desperation. He isn't singing pretty; he is fighting for his life. The interplay between his screaming vocals and Santana’s screaming guitar in the final minute is one of the most powerful sonic moments in MJ's discography.
-
Like "2000 Watts," this track was mixed to be an immersive experience. The sound effects are meticulously placed.
-
The Match: The song opens with the sound of a match being struck and a cigarette being lit.
-
The Environment: You can hear the ambient noise of a windy, deserted street. These sounds place the listener directly into the scene, a dark alleyway or a lonely motel room at night.
"Whatever Happens" was universally praised by critics. Even those who hated the Invincible album admitted this song was a stroke of genius. Because of the positive reception, it was slated to be the third or fourth single from the album. Plans were drawn up for a music video that would feature Michael and Carlos Santana. There were rumors that Michael wanted it to be a mini-movie with a plot involving a heist or a fugitive run. However, due to the collapse of the promotion between Michael and Sony Music, the single was cancelled. The music video was never filmed. To this day, it is cited by fans and music historians as the biggest commercial tragedy of the album. A song with Carlos Santana, coming off the biggest year of his career, was a guaranteed #1 hit that was left to die on the vine.
Legacy Despite not being a single, "Whatever Happens" has endured. It is frequently covered on talent shows (like The Voice or American Idol) because it showcases vocal range. It proves that even in his 40s, Michael Jackson was willing to experiment. He took a risk by mixing Latin rock with R&B, and the result was a timeless, noir masterpiece that sounds just as fresh today as it did in 2001.
LYRICS of WHATEVER HAPPENS
He gives another smile, tries to understand her side
To show that he cares
She can't stay in the room
She's consumed with everything that's been going on
She says, "Whatever happens
Don't let go of my hand"
"Everything will be alright", he assures her
But she doesn't hear a word that he says
Preoccupied, she's afraid
Afraid what they've been doing's not right
He doesn't know what to say, so he prays
"Whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever happens
Don't let go of my hand" (don't let go of my hand)
He says, "Whatever happens
Don't let go of my hand (don't let go of my hand)
Whatever happens
Don't you let go of my hand"
(Don't let go of my hand) doo-doo-doo-doo
(Doo-doo-doo-doo) yeah (doo-doo-doo-doo)
(Don't let go of my hand) oh, no
(Doo-doo-doo-doo)
He's working day and night, thinks he'll make her happy
Forgetting all the dreams that he had
He doesn't realize, it's not the end of the world
It doesn't have to be that bad
She tries to explain, "It's you that makes me happy"
Whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever happens
Don't let go of my hand (don't let go of my hand)
See, whatever happens
Don't you let go of my hand (don't let go of my hand)
See, whatever happens
Don't let go of my hand (don't let go of my hand)
See, whatever happens
Don't you let go of my hand
See, don't you do it, baby (don't let go of my hand)
I say, yeah
(Don't let go of my hand) don't you let go, baby
See, no baby, yeah
See, you
(Don't let go of my hand) don't you do it
Whatever happens (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't let go of my hand (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Whatever happens (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't you let go of my hand (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Whatever happens (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't you let go of my hand (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't you let go, baby (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't you, don't you let go (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
I say, yeah (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Can I get a big kiss, baby? (Sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Don't you let go, baby (sha-na-na-na, ooh, sha-na-na-na)
Yeah (sha-na-na-na) oh (sha-na-na-na)
Whatever happens (doo)
Just don't let go of my hand (doo)
Thank you, man
Thank you, Carlos
