Unbreakable

THE STORY BEHIND ' Unbreakable'

This is the track Michael Jackson wanted the world to hear first. It was his chosen lead single for the album, a declaration of strength that was intended to set the tone for the new millennium. Instead, it became the first casualty of his war with Sony Music.

The Statement of Intent Every Michael Jackson album opens with a statement. Bad opened with a challenge ("Bad"); Dangerous opened with a shattering glass sound ("Jam"); HIStory opened with a scream. Invincible opens with a shield. "Unbreakable" is Michael’s response to the decade of trauma he had just survived. By 2001, he had been through the 1993 allegations, a divorce, fatherhood, and endless media scrutiny. The title is literal: he is telling his critics that they cannot destroy him. He sings: "You can't believe it, you can't conceive it / And you can't touch me, 'cause I'm untouchable / And I know you hate it, and you can't take it / You'll never break me, 'cause I'm unbreakable."

To reinvent his sound for the 2000s, Michael hired Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, a 23-year-old producer who was dominating the R&B charts. Michael gave Jerkins a specific instruction: he wanted a sound that was "unusual." He didn't want standard drums; he wanted sounds that listeners couldn't identify. Jerkins delivered a production that is dense, metallic, and digital.

  • The Beat: The rhythm is heavy and syncopated, built on sharp, stinging snares that sound like whips cracking.

  • The Length: The song is a marathon, clocking in at 6 minutes and 26 seconds. It refuses to follow the standard "3-minute radio hit" formula, allowing the groove to lock in for an extended period.

"Unbreakable" features a rap verse from The Notorious B.I.G., marking their second collaboration. However, the context was tragic. Biggie had been murdered in 1997, four years before this album was released. Unlike "This Time Around," where the two legends were in the studio together, this collaboration was a posthumous construct. Michael personally selected the verse. It was originally recorded by Biggie for a Shaquille O'Neal song called "You Can't Stop the Reign" (1996). Michael loved the flow and the lyrics so much that he bought the rights to the verse and had it digitally transferred into "Unbreakable." The lyrics fit perfectly: "Lime to the lemon, my D.C. women / Bringin' in ten G's for in the beginnin'." Even from the grave, Biggie’s voice provided the street credibility Michael wanted to anchor the track.

The history of "Unbreakable" is defined by what didn't happen. Michael Jackson desperately wanted "Unbreakable" to be the lead single for the album. He had a massive vision for the music video, which he planned to be a CGI spectacle. He believed the song’s message was the perfect re-introduction to the world.

However, executives at Sony Music disagreed. They felt "Unbreakable" was too long and aggressive. They wanted a "safer," catchier radio song, so they overruled Michael and chose "You Rock My World" as the lead single. Michael was furious. He felt the label was sabotaging his artistic vision. This disagreement was the first crack in the dam that would eventually lead to the total collapse of the Invincible promotion. Michael refused to perform "You Rock My World" enthusiastically, resenting that "Unbreakable" was left on the shelf.

Michael’s vocals on the track are notably restrained. He sings in a lower, rapid-fire register during the verses, almost rapping the melody. He saves the power for the ad-libs. During the final two minutes of the song, as the track vamps, Michael unleashes a series of gritty, raw shouts that recall his Bad era intensity. The song also features backing vocals from Brandy (famous for "The Boy Is Mine"), who adds smooth, whispered harmonies to the background, blending with Michael’s voice.

The song continues the theme of "Tabloid Junkie." Michael addresses the media directly: "You seem obsessed with me / You lie to confuse me." He realizes that his fame has become a trap, but he flips the narrative, claiming that his spirit is immune to their attacks. It is a song about resilience, grounded in the belief that his talent protects him from his enemies.

As it was never released as a single, "Unbreakable" remains a "what if" moment in Michael’s career. Fans often cite it as one of the strongest tracks on the album and argue that it would have been a smash hit if Sony had released it with the intended video. It stands as the definitive anthem of the Invincible era: expensive, aggressive, futuristic, and defiant to the end.

LYRICS of UNBREAKABLE

Now I'm just wondering why you think
That you can get to me with anything
Seems like you'd now by now
When and how I get down
And with all that I've been through, I'm still around

Don't you ever make no mistake
Baby I've got what it takes
And there's no way you'll ever get to me
Why can't you see that you'll never ever hurt me
'Cause I won't let it be, see I'm too much for you baby

You can't believe it, you can't conceive it
And you can't touch me, 'cause I'm untouchable
And I know you hate it, and you can't take it
You'll never break me, 'cause I'm unbreakable

Now you can't stop me even though you think
That if you block me, you've done your thing
And when you bury me underneath all your pain
I'm steady laughin', while surfacing

Don't you ever make no mistake
Baby I've got what it takes
And there's no way you'll ever get to me
Why can't you see that you'll never ever hurt me
'Cause I won't let it be, see I'm too much for you baby

You can't believe it, you can't conceive it
And you can't touch me, 'cause I'm untouchable
And I know you hate it, and you can't take it
You'll never break me, 'cause I'm unbreakable

You can't believe it, you can't conceive it
And you can't touch me, 'cause I'm untouchable
And I know you hate it, and you can't take it
You'll never break me, 'cause I'm unbreakable

You can try to stop me, but it won't do a thing
No matter what you do, I'm still gonna be here
Through all your lies and silly games
I'ma still remain the same, I'm unbreakable

Uh, uh, what, uh
A lime to a lemon, my D.C. women
Bringin in ten G minimums to condos with elevators in 'em
Vehicles with televisions in 'em
Watch they entourage turn yours to just mirages
Disappearing acts, strictly nines and macs
Killers be serial, Copperfield material
My dreams is vivid, work hard to live it
Any place I visit, I got land there
How can players stand there and say I sound like them
HELLO?!
Push wigs back and push six Coupes that's yellow
Plus clips that expand from hand to elbow
Spray up your Day's Inn, any 'telle you in
Crack braggin sick of braggin how my mink be draggin
Desert E's street sweepers inside the beamer wagon
I rely on Bed-Stuy to shut it down if I die
Put that on my diamond bezel, you're messin with the devil
WHAT!!

You can't believe it, you can't conceive it
And you can't touch me, 'cause I'm untouchable
And I know you hate it, and you can't take it
You'll never break me, 'cause I'm unbreakable
