The Girl is Mine
THE STORY BEHIND ' THE GIRL IS MINE'
When Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones were planning the release strategy for Thriller, they faced a massive hurdle: radio segregation. In 1982, radio was still deeply divided. "Black" stations played R&B, and "White" stations played rock and pop. Michael didn't just want to be an R&B star; he wanted to be a global icon. To cross over, he needed a song that rock and pop stations couldn't refuse to play. His solution was to recruit the most famous white musician on the planet: Paul McCartney. This was a classic 'Trojan Horse' Strategy.
"The Girl Is Mine" was calculated. It wasn't written to be a funky dance track or a gritty rocker; it was written to be a charming, harmless pop ballad that would appeal to the older, white demographic that bought Beatles records. It was a "Trojan Horse." By releasing this soft, friendly duet as the first single, Michael tricked pop radio stations into putting him in heavy rotation. Once he had their attention, he hit them with "Billie Jean" and "Beat It."
The recording sessions for "The Girl Is Mine" were famously lighthearted. Paul McCartney flew to Los Angeles to record at Westlake Studios. The chemistry between Michael and Paul was playful and boyish.
In fact, they spent much of the studio time watching cartoons. They would sit on the studio couch, eating snacks and watching episodes of The Flintstones and Road Runner instead of working. Quincy Jones, usually a strict taskmaster, allowed it because he wanted to capture that authentic "buddy" vibe on the tape.
When it came time to record the spoken-word bridge, the famous "Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover, not a fighter" section, it was heavily improvised. Quincy told them to just banter like two guys fighting over a girl in a bar. They did multiple takes, giggling through most of them. The version that made the album was one of the few where they managed to keep a straight face, though you can still hear the smile in their voices.
When "The Girl Is Mine" was released as the lead single for Thriller on October 18, 1982, the reaction from critics and hardcore fans was mixed, bordering on hostile.
After the sharp, disco-funk of Off the Wall, fans were expecting something energetic. Instead, they got a breezy, mid-tempo ballad that sounded more like "Yacht Rock" than Michael Jackson. Critics called it "cheesy," "shallow," and a sell-out. Many feared that Michael had lost his edge and that the upcoming album would be a disappointment.
However, the general public loved it. The song shot to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for weeks. It accomplished exactly what Michael wanted: it got him onto stations that had never played his music before. It laid the red carpet for the revolution that followed.
Despite its innocent sound, "The Girl Is Mine" was the subject of a bitter plagiarism lawsuit. Two years after its release, a man named Fred Sanford (not the TV character) sued Michael Jackson for $5 million. Sanford claimed that Michael had stolen the song from a tape he had passed to a CBS promoter. The song was "Please Love Me Now".
The trial was a spectacle. Michael Jackson appeared in court to defend himself. In a famous moment, to prove how he wrote songs, Michael took the stand and explained his creative process. He described how he composed melodies in his head, humming them into a tape recorder. He then proceeded to beatbox and sing in the courtroom, effectively turning the trial into a concert. The jury was captivated.
Michael explained that many pop songs share similar chord structures and that any similarity was coincidental. The jury agreed, and Michael won the case. It was the first of many legal battles he would fight over his songwriting, proving that success brings scrutiny.
Beneath the glossy pop surface, the track features incredible musicianship. The music was performed by the band Toto (David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather).
-
The Guitar: The clean, melodic guitar lines were played by Steve Lukather. He kept it simple, playing tasty, jazz-influenced licks that complemented the vocals without overpowering them.
-
The Keyboards: The song opens with a distinctive Fender Rhodes keyboard riff played by Greg Phillinganes. It sets a "morning light" mood, gentle, warm, and waking up.
-
The Bass: Louis Johnson, usually known for his aggressive slapping, played a very restrained, melodic bass line that anchors the song.
"The Girl Is Mine" represents the high point of the Michael-Paul friendship. Ironically, the lyrics about two men fighting over "what's mine" would become a reality in their personal lives.
Years later, Michael would purchase the ATV Music Publishing catalog, which included the rights to nearly all of The Beatles' songs. Paul McCartney, who had advised Michael to get into music publishing, felt betrayed that Michael had bought his songs out from under him. The "doggone girl" they were fighting over in the song eventually became the ownership of the music itself, and their friendship never recovered.
"The Girl Is Mine" is often ranked lower than the other titans on the Thriller album. It doesn't have the cultural weight of "Billie Jean" or the rock power of "Beat It." However, without this song, Thriller might not have become the monster it did. It was the key that unlocked the door to the white mainstream audience. It stands as a testament to Michael’s business savvy, sometimes you have to be gentle before you can be dangerous.
LYRICS of THE GIRL IS MINE
Every night she walks right in my dreams
Since I met her from the start
I'm so proud I am the only one
Who is special in her heart
The girl is mine
The doggone girl is mine
I know she's mine
Because the doggone girl is mine
I don't understand the way you think
Saying that she's yours not mine
Sending roses and your silly dreams
Really just a waste of time
Because she's mine
The doggone girl is mine
Don't waste your time
Because the doggone girl is mine
I love you more than he
(Take you anywhere)
Well, I love you endlessly
(Loving we will share)
So come and go with me
To one's town
But we both cannot have her
So it's one or the other
And one day you'll discover
That she's my girl forever and ever
Don't build your hopes to be let down
'Cause I really feel it's time
I know she'll tell you I'm the one for her
'Cause she said I blow her mind
The girl is mine
The doggone girl is mine
Don't waste your time
Because the doggone girl is mine
She's mine, she's mine
No, no, no, she's mine
The girl is mine, the girl is mine
The girl is mine, the girl is mine
The girl is mine (mine, mine)
Yep, she's mine (mine, mine)
The girl is mine (mine, mine)
Yeah, she's mine (mine, mine)
Don't waste your time
Because the doggone girl is mine
The girl is mine, the girl is mine
Michael, we're not going to fight about this, okay?
Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover not a fighter
I've heard it all before, Michael, she told me that I'm her forever lover
You know, don't you remember?
Well, after loving me, she said she couldn't love another
Is that what she said?
Yes, she said it, you keep dreaming
I don't believe it (mine, mine)
The girl is mine (mine, mine)
No, mine
She's mine, mine, mine (mine, mine, mine, mine)
'Cause the girl is mine (mine, mine)
The girl is mine (mine, mine)
Girl is mine...
