Scream
THE STORY BEHIND ' Scream '
This song marks the moment Michael Jackson stopped trying to please the media and started fighting back. It is aggressive, industrial, and historic, the only time the King of Pop and his sister, the Queen of Pop, officially collaborated.
By 1995, Janet Jackson was a global superstar in her own right, riding high on the success of her Janet. album. Michael, conversely, was emerging from the darkest period of his life, the 1993 child molestation allegations.
For years, fans had begged for a duet. Michael finally made the call. He didn't want a "love song" or a ballad; he wanted an ally. He needed someone who understood the pain of the spotlight to stand beside him and scream at the world. Janet agreed immediately. It was a show of family unity, a public declaration that the Jacksons were standing together against the press.
To get a fresh, aggressive sound, Michael stepped away from his usual team and hired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the production duo responsible for Janet’s biggest hits.
They met in New York to record. The goal was to create something "industrial." They wanted the beat to sound like a machine breaking down. The track is built on clattering percussion, heavy rock guitars, and distorted synths. It was the hardest, grittiest music Michael had ever recorded, far removed from the polished pop of Thriller.
The recording session turned into a friendly battle. Michael and Janet were known for being fiercely competitive. Jimmy Jam recalls that Michael arrived at the studio first. He asked to turn the headphones up, danced around the room to get hyped, and then delivered a blistering vocal performance in one take. He then looked at the producers and said, "How was that?" Janet, feeling the pressure of following that performance, refused to record her vocals that day. She flew to her own studio in Minneapolis to record her parts in private, ensuring she could match his intensity without him watching. When Michael heard her vocals, he was impressed but his competitive nature kicked in. He flew to Minneapolis and re-recorded parts of his own vocals to make sure he wasn't outshined. The result is a duet where both siblings are pushing their voices to the absolute limit.
"Stop Pressuring Me!" "Scream" is a retaliation. For the first time, Michael addressed the media directly and angrily. The lyrics are raw and unfiltered.
-
"Tired of you tellin' the story your way / It's causin' confusion, you think it's okay."
-
"You're sellin' out souls but I care about mine."
The chorus "Stop pressuring me!" became a mantra. It wasn't just about the allegations; it was about the invasion of privacy, the helicopters over his house, and the lies printed in the tabloids. In the uncensored version of the song, Michael even drops the F-bomb ("Stop f***ing with me"), marking the first time he used explicit profanity in a song, signaling the end of his "Disney" image.
If the song was a statement, the music video was a blockbuster. Directed by Mark Romanek, the video for "Scream" holds the Guinness World Record for the Most Expensive Music Video Ever Made, with a budget of $7 million.
The concept was simple: Michael and Janet are siblings alone on a massive spacecraft, fleeing Earth to get away from the noise.
-
The Set: The spaceship set was gigantic, featuring multiple rooms including a zen garden, a media room, and a gallery.
-
The Style: The aesthetic was strictly black-and-white, inspired by Japanese sci-fi and anime (clips from the anime Akira can be seen on the screens). Michael debuted a new, edgier look with spiky hair and heavy eyeliner, while Janet sported a darker, gothic makeup style.
-
The "Middle Finger": In one scene, Janet mimics urinating standing up, and later, Michael flips the middle finger to the camera. It was a shocking display of rebellion that MTV initially censored.
The most famous scene in the video features Michael and Janet dancing on the ceiling in a media room. While it looked like CGI, it was actually a practical effect. The set was built on a rotating gimbal (like a hamster wheel) that spun the room while the cameras were bolted to the floor. This allowed the siblings to slide up the walls and bounce off the ceiling, creating the illusion of zero gravity.
Released on May 31, 1995, "Scream" made history by debuting at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut in the chart's history at that time. It won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.
More importantly, it redefined Michael's image. He was no longer the victim; he was the aggressor. The song set the tone for the entire HIStory album: loud, unapologetic, and ready for war. It remains the definitive "rebellion anthem" of his career and a testament to the power of the Jackson dynasty.
LYRICS of SCREAM
I'm tired of injustice
I'm tired of the schemes
Your lies are disgustin'
So what does it mean? Damn it
You're kickin' me down, ah
I got to get up
As jacked as it sounds
The whole system sucks, damn it (hoo)
(Hoo, hoo)
Peek in the shadow (hoo, hoo)
I come into the light (hoo, hoo)
You tell me I'm wrong
Then you better prove you're right
You're selling out souls, but
I care about mine
I've got to get stronger
And I won't give up the fight
With such confusion, don't it make you wanna scream?
Make you wanna scream
Your bash abusing victimize within the scheme
You try to cope with every lie they scrutinize
Somebody please have mercy
'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
I'm tired of your telling (telling)
The story your way (the story your way)
It's causing confusion (confusion)
You think it's okay, damn it
Keep changing the rules
While I keep playing the game
I can't take it much longer
I think I might go insane
With such confusion, don't it
Make me wanna scream
Now, baby
With such confusion, don't it make you wanna scream?
Make you wanna scream
Your bash abusing victimize within the scheme
Scheming, baby
You find your pleasure scandalizing every lie
Oh, Father, please have mercy
'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Oh, my God, can't believe what I saw
As I turned on the TV this evening
I was disgusted by all the injustice
All the injustice
Baby
With such delusions, don't it make you wanna scream?
Make you wanna scream
Your bash abusing victimize within the scheme
You try to cope with every lie they scrutinize
Oh, brother, please have mercy
'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
Makes me wanna scream
Stop pressuring me
Just stop pressuring me
Stop pressuring me
