Invincible

THE STORY BEHIND ' Invincible'

This is the title track of the album, but it contains a massive plot twist. While the album title refers to Michael Jackson’s career being indestructible, the song itself is about a woman who is immune to his charms. It serves as the final chapter of the opening "Darkchild Trilogy."

When you listen to the Invincible album, the first three tracks, "Unbreakable," "Heartbreaker," and "Invincible" form a cohesive sonic block. Fans and critics often refer to this as the "Darkchild Trilogy." Produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, all three songs share the same DNA: they are fast, aggressive, industrial, and heavily syncopated. They flow into one another almost seamlessly.

"Invincible" serves as the finale of this opening suite. Michael intended these three songs to hit the listener like a rapid-fire combination of punches. He wanted to establish a "sound of the future" before slowing the album down with ballads. While some critics argued that the three songs sounded too similar (specifically "Heartbreaker" and "Invincible"), Michael loved the relentless energy they created together.

The genius of this song lies in its title. When fans bought the album Invincible, they expected the title track to be a superhero anthem, a song about Michael overcoming the allegations, the press, and the haters (similar to "Unbreakable"). Instead, Michael subverted expectations.

  • The Real Subject: The song is about a woman who refuses to love him. She is the one who is "Invincible."

  • The Story: Michael plays the role of a desperate suitor. He tries to buy her fancy cars, he begs, he pleads, but nothing works. She is cold, detached, and emotionally impenetrable. "She's invincible... even when I beg and plead / She's invincible... she don't want a thing from me."

It is a rare moment of humility. The biggest star in the world, who can have anything he wants, cannot have her. By flipping the meaning of the word, Michael turns a boastful album title into a song about vulnerability and rejection.

Just like the previous track, "Invincible" features a rap verse by the mysterious rapper Fats (Floyd Bentley). It is highly unusual for a major pop album to feature the same unknown guest artist on two consecutive tracks. This decision highlights just how much Michael viewed "Heartbreaker" and "Invincible" as sibling songs. Fats’ verse continues the narrative of the rejected lover. He raps about the frustration of trying to impress a woman who "stopping my cash flow" but gives nothing in return. His deep, gravelly voice once again provides the counterweight to Michael’s sharp, cutting tenor.

Musically, "Invincible" is a wall of sound. Rodney Jerkins built the track using layers of synthesized strings and a "stuttering" drum beat that mimics a heartbeat skipping.

  • The Piano: Unlike the previous two tracks, "Invincible" features a prominent, haunting piano melody that loops throughout the verses. It gives the song a slightly darker, more noir atmosphere than the frenetic "Heartbreaker."

  • The Ad-Libs: The highlight of the track is Michael’s vocal improvisation near the end. As the song fades out, Michael unleashes high-pitched "Hee-hees" and gritty growls, fighting against the mechanical beat.

Some musicologists have noted that the concept of the song, the man who can give a woman the world but is still rejected echoes the themes of 1970s soul music. Specifically, the spoken intro (which was cut from the final version but appears on demos) and the smooth, pleading nature of the melody suggest Michael was trying to create a futuristic version of a Barry White or Isaac Hayes heartbreak anthem, filtered through a digital processor.

The Critics' Debate Upon release, "Invincible" (the song) was often cited as the weakest of the opening trio. Critics felt it didn't distinguish itself enough from "Heartbreaker." However, in retrospect, many fans prefer "Invincible" because it is more melodic. While "Heartbreaker" is pure noise and rhythm, "Invincible" has a sweeping, cinematic chorus that is catchy and radio-friendly. It balances the aggression of the beat with the sadness of the lyrics perfectly.

Legacy "Invincible" was never released as a single and never performed live. However, it remains a crucial part of the album's identity. It defines the "Sound of 2001", a time when R&B was becoming increasingly electronic and robotic. It stands as a fascinating example of Michael Jackson playing with his own image: inviting you in with a title that screams "Power," only to tell you a story about "Weakness."

LYRICS of INVINCIBLE

Well, well, uh
Well, well

I could tear down these walls that keep you and I apart
I know I could claim your heart and our perfect love will start
But, girl, you just won't approve of the things that I do
When all I do is for you, but still, you say it ain't cool

If there's somebody else
He can't love you like me
And he says he'll treat you well
He can't treat you like me
And he's buying diamonds and pearls
He can't do it like me
And he's taking you all across the world
He can't trick you like me

Why can't you feelin' me?
She's invincible
I can do anything
She's invincible
Even when I beg and plead
She's invincible
Girl won't give in to me
She's in-she's invincible

Well, well
See
Well, well
C'mon now, oh

Now many times I've told you of all the things I would do
But I can't seem to get through no matter how I try to
So tell me how does it seem that you ain't checking for me
When I know that I could be more than you could ever dream

If there's somebody else
He can't love you like me
And he says he'll treat you well
He can't treat you like me
And he's buying diamonds and pearls
He can't do it like me
And he's taking you all across the world
He can't trick you like me

Why can't you feelin' me?
She's invincible (c'mon now)
I can do anything
She's invincible
Even when I beg and plead
She's invincible (c'mon now)
Girl won't give in to me
She's in-'cause she's invincible

Now some way I'll have to prove all that I said I would do
Giving you everything, fulfilling your fantasy
Then maybe you'll change your mind
And finally give in time
Then I'll be showing you what other men
Are supposed to do for you, my baby

Yo, mami, stop the frontin', I'm real with mine
All the things that I promised, I'll fulfill in time
Chains and the bracelet, got the realest shine
So many trips, ya'll have jetlag and still be fine
You can trip, but this money ain't long enough
He can spit, but his game ain't strong enough
Now the way you resisting, this ain't cool
It's like nothing seems to work, she's invincible

Why can't you feelin' me?
She's invincible (c'mon now)
I can do anything
She's invincible (c'mon now)
Even when I beg and plead
She's invincible (c'mon now)
That girl won't give in to me
She's invincible (ooh)

You ain't feelin' me
She's invincible (whoa, yeah)
She's invincible, yeah (she's invincible)
Why ain't you tellin' me, baby (she's invincible)
Why can't you feelin' me, yeah (she's invincible)
You see that girl won't give in to me, yeah, yeah (she's invincible)

She's invincible
She's invincible
She's invincible
She's in-she's invincible

Why can't you feelin' me?
She's invincible (c'mon now)
I can do anything
She's invincible
Even when I beg and plead
She's invincible (c'mon now)
That girl won't give in to me
She's in-she's invincible (yeah, yeah)
