I Can't Help It

THE STORY BEHIND ' I CAN'T HELP IT '

This song represents the artistic summit of the Off the Wall album—a sophisticated jazz-soul collaboration between Michael Jackson and his idol, Stevie Wonder. The story below explores the musical complexity of the track and its massive influence on hip-hop culture.

By 1979, Michael Jackson was a superstar, but he was still looking for validation from his musical heroes. At the very top of that list was Stevie Wonder. Both men shared a unique bond: they were black child prodigies who had grown up in the Motown system, surviving the pressures of fame to become independent artists. Michael famously spent his childhood watching Stevie in the studio, studying how he worked.

When Quincy Jones began assembling the tracklist for Off the Wall, he knew he wanted a song that would push Michael musically. He reached out to Stevie Wonder, who had just released his magnum opus Songs in the Key of Life. Stevie revealed he had a song he had been working on a shimmering, mid-tempo jazz piece called "I Can't Help It."

Stevie had originally intended to record the song himself. However, upon hearing about Michael’s new direction, he agreed to give the song away. It was the ultimate "passing of the torch." The song was co-written by Susaye Greene, a former member of The Supremes, giving it a pedigree that was pure Motown royalty.

"I Can't Help It" is unlike anything else on Off the Wall. It isn't disco, and it isn't standard pop. It is a sophisticated piece of jazz-fusion. The chord progression is notoriously difficult, filled with "extensions" like major 9ths, minor 11ths, and chromatic shifts that usually only appear in serious jazz compositions.

For Michael, this was a test. He wasn't just singing a catchy hook; he had to navigate a melody that floated over shifting musical sands. He passed with flying colors. His performance on the track is understated and silky. He sings behind the beat, dragging his phrasing slightly to create a relaxed, "in the pocket" feel that jazz singers spend decades perfecting.

The heartbeat of the song is the bass line. It was played by Nathan Watts, Stevie Wonder’s longtime bass player. Watts didn't play a standard funk groove; he played a melodic counterpoint that bubbles underneath the track. The sound is often described as "liquid" or "underwater." This was achieved by the masterful arrangement of the synthesizers (played by Greg Phillinganes) blending with the bass guitar. The production team used an ARP String Ensemble synthesizer to create the "ethereal" texture that washes over the listener in the intro. It sounds like looking at the night sky which was vast, spacious, and twinkling.

The most famous part of the song is arguably the outro. As the lyrics fade away, Michael begins to scat. He improvises a wordless melody ("da-da-doo-da...") that flutters like a saxophone solo. This was a pivotal moment for Michael’s image. It showed critics that he wasn't just a dancer or a pop singer; he was a true vocalist with jazz sensibilities. He uses his voice as an instrument, bending notes and playing with the rhythm. Quincy Jones, a jazz trumpeter by trade, encouraged this improvisation. He wanted to capture the spontaneity of a live jazz club session within the polished structure of a pop album.

While "I Can't Help It" was never released as a commercial single in the US, it arguably has the most enduring legacy of any song on the album within the hip-hop community. In 1993, the rap group De La Soul sampled the song for their hit "Breakadawn." They didn't just take a drum loop; they took the entire harmonic structure of the intro. This introduced "I Can't Help It" to a completely new generation. Since then, the track has been sampled or covered by artists ranging from LL Cool J to Mary J. Blige.

In 2010, jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding released a cover of the song that helped her win the Grammy for Best New Artist beating Justin Bieber. This proved that the composition itself was timeless, capable of winning awards more than 30 years after it was written.

The Emotional Core Lyrically, the song is about surrender. It describes the feeling of being so overwhelmed by love that you lose your composure. "Tiptoed through my room / 'Cause I don't want to wake you" paints an intimate, domestic picture that was very different from the "dance floor" themes of the other tracks.

The song proved that Michael could be sexy without being aggressive. It established the "quiet storm" radio format sound that would dominate R&B in the 1980s. It remains a favorite among musicians, the track that bass players, keyboardists, and producers point to when they want to talk about the genius of the Off the Wall production.

LYRICS of I CAN'T HELP IT

Looking in my mirror
Took me by surprise
I can't help but see you
Running often through my mind

Helpless like a baby
Sensual disguise
I can't help but love you
It's getting better all the time

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

Love to run my fingers
Softly while you sigh
Love came and possessed you
Bringing sparkles to your eyes

Like a trip to heaven
Heaven is the prize
And I'm so glad I found you, yeah
You're an angel in disguise

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

And I'm so glad I found you, yeah
You're an angel in disguise

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it, no, even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
Wouldn't help it, no, no

I can't help it if I wanted to
I wouldn't help it even if I could
I can't help it if I wanted to
Wouldn't help it, no, no, no
