Heal the World
THE STORY BEHIND ' Heal the World '
This is the song Michael Jackson was most proud of creating. It is the heart of the Dangerous album, a humanitarian anthem that launched a global charity, defined a Super Bowl, and became his final message to the world.
While most of the Dangerous album was written in high-tech recording studios, "Heal the World" was born in nature. At Michael’s home, Neverland Ranch, there was a specific tree he loved to climb. He called it his "Giving Tree." He would sit in its branches for hours, observing the natural world.
Michael later explained that the song came to him while he was sitting in this tree. He didn't force it; he said the song "dropped into his lap" from the heavens. He wanted to write a song with a melody so simple and universal that people of all cultures even those who didn't speak English could hum it instantly. He famously stated in a 2001 interview that out of all the songs he ever wrote, "Heal the World" was the one he was most proud of, even more than "Billie Jean" or "Thriller," because of its message.
To bring this vision to life, Michael worked with the legendary Paich family. David Paich (of the band Toto) played the keyboards and helped craft the lush, synthesizer-heavy soundscape. His father, Marty Paich, arranged and conducted the orchestra.
The production is incredibly dense but gentle. It features:

The song opens with the voice of a young girl saying, "Think about the generations and to say we want to make it a better place for our children." This sets the tone immediately, this isn't a pop song; it's a plea.

The hauntingly beautiful solo voice at the very end of the song belongs to a young singer named Christa Larson.

The massive sound in the chorus is provided by the John Bahler Singers. Michael layered his own voice into the choir to give it that signature texture.
"Heal the World" is responsible for the modern Super Bowl Halftime Show. In 1993, Michael Jackson headlined Super Bowl XXVII. It was the first time a superstar had ever performed solo at halftime.
The climax of the show was "Heal the World." As the song began, 3,500 local children ran onto the field in Los Angeles. At the same time, the entire stadium audience (98,000 people) participated in a "card stunt," holding up colored placards that formed images of children holding hands across the stands. In the center of the stage, a massive inflatable globe rose up, with Michael singing while surrounded by children of all nations. It remains one of the most viewed television events in US history and established the song as a global anthem for peace.
For the music video, Michael made a bold artistic choice: he decided not to be in it. Directed by Joe Pytka (who also did "The Way You Make Me Feel"), the video is a montage of documentary footage.
It depicts children living in areas of conflict and poverty, specifically highlighting the unrest in Burundi. It shows soldiers, tanks, and poverty, juxtaposed with images of children playing and smiling despite their circumstances. By removing himself from the video, Michael forced the viewer to look at the suffering rather than the superstar. It was a risky move for MTV, but it paid off, becoming a staple of the network’s humanitarian programming.
The song wasn't just a piece of music; it was a mission statement. In 1992, Michael launched the Heal the World Foundation. The goal was to improve the lives of children worldwide.
The foundation did real work. During the Bosnian War, Michael used the foundation to airlift 46 tons of supplies to Sarajevo. He also funded drug abuse education programs and paid for liver transplants for children in Hungary. Every cent of profit from the Dangerous World Tour was donated to charity, much of it channeled through this foundation.
Tragically, the song gained a new, somber meaning on July 7, 2009. At Michael Jackson’s public memorial service at the Staples Center, "Heal the World" was the closing performance. The entire Jackson family, along with the guest performers, gathered on stage to sing it. It was a heartbreaking moment that reminded the world that beneath the scandals and the noise, Michael’s primary goal was always to "make a better place."
Released on November 23, 1992, the song reached #2 in the UK and was a top 10 hit across Europe, though it only reached #27 in the US.
However, chart positions are irrelevant to this song’s legacy. It has become a standard for school choirs, charity events, and peace rallies. It represents the "Messianic" phase of Michael’s career, the point where he stopped trying to be the coolest man in the room and started trying to be the kindest.
LYRICS of HEAL THE WORLD
Think about, ehm, the generations and
Say we wanna make it a better place for our children
And our children's children, so that they
They, they know it's a better world for them
And think if they can make it a better place
There's a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be much brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try
You'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel there's no hurt or sorrow
There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space
Make a better place
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
If you want to know why
There's a love that cannot lie
Love is strong, it only cares for joyful giving
If we try, we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear or dread, we stop existing and start living
Then it feels that always
Love's enough for us growing
Make a better world
Make a better world
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
And the dream we were conceived in will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life, wound this Earth, crucify its soul?
Though it's plain to see this world is heavenly, be God's glow
We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart, I feel you are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we'll cry happy tears
See the nations turn their swords into ploughshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space
To make a better place
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
Make a better place (You and for me)
Make a better place (You and for me)
Make a better place (You and for me)
Heal the world we live in (You and for me)
Save it for our children (You and for me)
Heal the world we live in (You and for me)
Save it for our children (You and for me)
Heal the world we live in (You and for me)
Save it for our children (You and for me)
Heal the world we live in (You and for me)
Save it for our children
