If "Jam" was Michael’s nod to hip-hop, "Can't Let Her Get Away" was his love letter to James Brown. Michael often cited James Brown as his greatest influence, but rarely did he emulate him as directly as he does on this track.

Producer Teddy Riley built the song around the DNA of 70s funk. He sampled two James Brown classics: "Get Up Offa That Thing" and "Funky Drummer." Rather than just looping them, he chopped them up and layered them with modern, industrial drum machines. Michael’s vocal performance is pure James Brown. He doesn't sing the verses in a melody; he barks them. He uses short, staccato grunts and percussive breaths. The bridge of the song, where the music breaks down and Michael begins to ad-lib "I got the feeling... she's never gonna know," is a direct channeling of the Godfather of Soul’s stage energy.

 

One of the most fascinating aspects of this song is its origin. Before Teddy Riley added the synthesizers, the entire song existed in Michael’s head. During the recording sessions at Larrabee Studios, Michael recorded a demo where he beatboxed the entire rhythm track.

Unlike most artists who hum a melody, Michael could beatbox complex drum patterns, basslines, and high-hats simultaneously. He dictated the groove to Teddy Riley by mouth. Riley later said that Michael’s internal clock was flawless; he was a "human drum machine." The final version of the song retains this "mouth percussion" feel, with Michael’s beatboxing layered underneath the actual drums to give it a wetter, more organic texture.

 

"Can't Let Her Get Away" is perhaps the most aggressive New Jack Swing track Michael ever recorded. The genre, defined by its swing beat (a rhythm that limps slightly) and heavy usage of samples is pushed to its limit here. The tempo is incredibly fast (around 108 BPM), making it a challenge for even professional dancers.

The production is cluttered and chaotic on purpose. It is filled with horn stabs, record scratches, and vocal samples (including a "Yeah!" shout that repeats throughout). It was designed to sound like a block party in Harlem. This was a risky move for a pop star known for pristine production like Thriller, but Michael wanted the album to feel "street."

 

Lyrically, the song seems straightforward: a man desperate to keep a woman from leaving. He sings, "I thought she had to have it... since the first time she came." However, fans and critics have analyzed the lyrics as being about control. Michael was a perfectionist who obsessed over every detail of his career. The frantic, panicked delivery of the line "I can't let her get away!" mirrors his own anxiety about losing his audience or his privacy.

It was not included in the Dangerous World Tour setlist, nor was it part of the Super Bowl halftime show. However, during rehearsals for the tour, Michael reportedly worked on choreography for the song. Dancers who worked with him have stated that the routine was incredibly physical, involving fast footwork and spins that mimicked the James Brown "shuffle." Ultimately, it was cut from the show, likely because the setlist was already packed with hits, and the song requires a tremendous amount of vocal stamina to perform live while dancing.

 

While it wasn't released as a single, "Can't Let Her Get Away" has developed a cult following among dancers and choreographers. Its complex rhythm makes it a favorite for dance battles. In the hip-hop dance community, it is often cited as a "test" of a dancer's ability to stay in the pocket of a swing beat.
